MCE Bank

A twelve-month rebuild during live banking operations.

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

MCE Bank

THE TASK
Renew infrastructure while banking operations continue.
OUR CONTRIBUTION
Build redundant infrastructure, deliver the transition with internal IT and document the work.
THE OUTCOME
The internal team operates the environment with support from a resident engineer.
THE PROJECT

Starting point
and requirements.

MCE Bank is a BaFin-regulated full-service bank with around 200 employees. Its business applications run on central infrastructure.

Several core components were nearing end of life. At the same time, DORA increased requirements for availability, evidence and tested recoverability. The rebuild began before these became urgent constraints.

NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENTS

There is no downtime window. The transition takes place during live banking operations, with every step documented for audit.

IMPLEMENTATION

What Sysfacts
took on.

  • Recorded all systems and dependencies, focusing on points where a single failure would have stopped operations
  • Built a cluster across two fire compartments 500 metres apart, with metro-cluster storage and a redundant switch fabric
  • Placed additional secondary systems in external colocation off campus
  • Carried out the transition with internal IT alongside daily operations. Each step was documented as it happened
AFTER THE PROJECT

What changed for the client.

OUTCOME AND OPERATIONS

Networking and storage are designed so that a single component failure does not interrupt operations. Recovery is regularly tested with SureBackup and documented. The internal team operates the environment with a resident engineer’s support.

Technical context
01

Starting point

Central banking applications depended on several infrastructure components nearing end of maintenance. The assessment focused on dependencies where a single failure would have interrupted operations.

02

Virtualisation and storage

The new environment uses VMware vSphere across two fire compartments approximately 500 metres apart. iSCSI storage is configured as a metro cluster; a redundant switch fabric connects the infrastructure.

03

External site and backup

Additional secondary systems are hosted off campus. Veeam Backup & Replication and offsite backup are part of the protection design. Recovery is regularly tested with SureBackup and documented.

04

Transition and operations

Migration was performed with internal IT during live banking operations. Work was documented immediately. The internal team operates the environment with a resident engineer’s support.

Insights: backup, high availability and disaster recovery

Portrait of Björn Hippmann
“The infrastructure was still running, but the risk was no longer acceptable. What mattered was keeping the rebuild manageable: clear documentation, every step agreed in advance and, in the end, stability we could demonstrate.”
